The first 200 Austin cars registering for entry to the Gemini Events’ Historic Vehicle Rally at Wentworth Woodhouse, near Sheffield, Yorks, will receive a very special commemorative plaque that will need a bit of extra space on the mantelpiece.
At 180 metres (606 feet) Wentworth Woodhouse has the longest country house façade in Europe and is also the largest private house in the UK with over 23,000 square metres (250,000 sq ft) of floor space. So it is entirely appropriate that Gemini Events has commissioned an extra wide rally plaque to commemorate the first time that they are organising the popular annual event, having acquired the rights from the previous organisers.
The estate was home to the young Herbert Austin from 1870 when his father was appointed farm bailiff. Herbert first went to the village school, later continuing his education at Rotherham Grammar School. He went on to found the eponymous car manufacturer and to be knighted in 1936.
His legacy is celebrated with 'Herbert Austin Day' where Austin vehicle owners take their place in the Herbert Austin section at the front of the historic house. All other vintage and classic vehicles of all makes are also welcomed to Wentworth Woodhouse and the 2015 show takes place on Sunday 6th September.
The day will feature a vintage village with tea-room, vintage clothes and homeware, while enthusiasts will enjoy a wide selection of autojumble trade stands. There will be live entertainment from ‘My Favourite Things’ singing songs from the 1940s & 50s plus live arena commentary featuring vehicles from the pre and post war era.
Vintage and classic car owners can pre-book to attend the show to guarantee their parking place on the lawns in front of the house and details can be found on the Gemini Events website at www.classicmotorshows.co.uk
Entry on the day for vehicle owners and the general public is £5 adults, £2.50 for chidren (4-16 years).
Austin clubs can contact the organisers on 01527 831726 to reserve their free commemorative show plaques and book a club stand in front of the house.
